Euro 20 Group D v Czech Republic, Wembley, London

UEFA Euro 2020

Group D

England v Czech Republic

Wembley Stadium

London, England

22 Jun 2021

England continued at Wembley, hoping for a win against the Czech Republic which would secure the winners slot in Group D lining up a Round of 16 tie against the Runners up of the Group of Death (France, Portugal, Germany and hosts Hungary).

The attendance was again capped at 22500 but the amount of Czech supporters were noticeably smaller than the Croatian support and a quantum leap from what the Jocks had mustered a few days ago. The good news was that we were back in the area where we usually sit.

Hallam Hotel was the venue for our digs, chosen because we wanted a change of scenery and a different pub

Portland Place near Post Office tower

The Stags Head is a great little boozer and downstairs is a Greek takeaway that delivers to the pub. The landlord is a Leicester fan (not his fault)

All decked out for the Euros

With a couple down the hatch we head to Wembley

All quiet leading to the stadium

We must be early as the helpers and stewards outnumber the fans

The game ended in a 1:0 win to England which was enough to send the 3 Lions through to meet the Germans in the next round. Sterling got the deciding goal in the 12th minute from a Jack Grealish cross. Grealish and Saka came out with credit as the match turned into a bit of a slugfest as England grinded out the win. Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell missed out through COVID isolation but Harry Maguire did manage a full 90 minutes following his ankle injury

Feeling rough - blame the slack licensing hours of the Stags Head

Kings Cross; a coffee and a wrap for breakfast and then home. Onwards to the Germans and the Round of 16
