Parken, Copenhagen

The unofficial programme as there was non officially produced for this game. This one is from Ebay!

This tickets is one of 30 tickets which were issued to each of the teams coaching/medical staff. The game was played behind closed doors because of the COVID pandemic

Parken was built on the site of Denmark's former national stadium, Idraetspark which stood since 1911. It was demolished in 1990 and the new stadium was built in 1992. Since 2014 the official sponsored name of the stadium is Telia Parken.

The stadium now has a reduced capacity of 38,065. In the first game following the stadium's rebuild the Danes suffered a 2:1 loss to Germany in a friendly in 1992, in front of 40,500 fans.

Sue finally ticks the Little Mermaid off her bucket list

Unveiled on 23 August 1913, The Little Mermaid was a gift from the Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen.

The sculpture is inspired by Ellen Price, who in 1909 danced the lead role in the ballet The Little Mermaid at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. However she refused to be modelled nude and so the sculptures wife, Eline Eriksen posed nude for her husband and the sculpture was created.

St Alban's Church in Copenhagen is referred to as the English Church and was built between 1885-87 due to the growing English congregation within the city.

which Copenhagen stands on

Ivar Huitfeldt Column. A memorial to him (the Captain of the battleship Dannebrog) and 600 sailors who lost their life's on 4 October 1710 during the Great Northern war 1700-2. It is the only wreck within Danish sea territory where it is forbidden to dive because it is considered a cemetery

From the fountain on Tolbodgade

Frederik's Church (aka the Marble Church) was finally built in 1894 following serious delays due to financial problems with the marble construction

Alexander Nevski church was a gift from Tsar Alexander III to celebrate his marriage to the Danish Princess Marie Dagmar

Nyhavn is a 17th century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen and just happens to be my favourite place. But take caution because a pub crawl will cost you £££

'Havfruen' (The Mermaid) was our first Nyhaven pub

Anchovies and Olives washed down with Carlsberg

No meal in Denmark is complete without Aquavit, this one is from Copenhagen and is flavoured with Dill

The figurehead of the Havfruen

The interior depicts a great naval battle

The Memorial Anchor at the base of the Nyhavn canal commemorates the civilian sailors who lost their lives at sea during WWII

It's been a long day, good night

Day 3 - 'Boat trip on match-day', but first
we walk down Istegade passing central station

England away, doing the compulsory tour of Irish Bars

Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park near the central station  which was opened in 1843 and reputedly the 2nd most popular in the world.

Copenhagen Town Hall houses Jen Olsen's world clock and is  one of the tallest buildings in the city.

The Scandic Palace Hotel is in front of the Town hall Square a bargain at £140 per night

The start of Strøget which is supposed to be the longest pedestrian shopping street in Europe

The Lure Players was made between 1911-14 and was a gift to the city from the Carlsberg foundation on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of JC Jacobsen (1811-87). Reputedly the Lure Players should blow their horns when a virgin passes them.

The equestrian statue (built 1902) of Absalon on Højbro Plads marks the 700th anniversary of his death. Bishop Absalon is the legendary founder of Copenhagen

We hopped on a boat at Ved Stranden. Here we pass the old stock exchange (Børsen), interestingly the decoration of the spire is twined dragon tails

Leaving Nyhavn and entering Inderhavnen (inner harbour)

The Royal Danish Playhouse was built in 2007 and
projects out into Copenhagen's inner harbour

Inner Harbour Bridge

Storm Broen (Storm bridge)

Returning to Højbro Plads with the
Helligand Parish church just in view

After the boat ride we take a closer look at Christianshavn's famous baroque church with its renown helix spire and staircase

View from the water

Kafe Falcon is sucking us in

Its match day so rude not to indulge on
the first beverage of the day

Every post box seemed to be vandalised. Not sure why👎

The Vandkunsten fountain (1910). Water spurts from a fishes heads, a reminder that the square was formerly a fish market

is the official Arsenal Boozer

The anthems are not quite the same

Its not the greatest first 45 by England
but the 2nd half is much better

International football is so bad during COVID👎

Trippier does his best to spark them into life. Kane nearly profits from a lofted ball late in the game, but it was cleared off the line and the result ends up as a dull 0:0

The walk home takes us passed the Town Hall..

... and Tivoli Gardens

Day 4 - Carlsberg Brewery
The only bad weather day so we stay fairly local

This street is in 'Humleby' (Hops Town) and is
located just below the Carlsberg brewery

The Dipylon (Double Gate) was built in 1892 and marked the Vesterbro side entrance to the brewery

The Elephant Tower (AKA Elephant Gate) was
built in 1901and marks the entrance from Valby

The swastika displayed here pre-dates the rise of the Nazis and has an entirely different meaning. It was used in ancient Greece as a sign of prosperity and wealth.

The other side of the Elephant Tower

Sadly the Carl Jacobsen House was closed due to COVID😡

After his death in 1914, members of his family continued to live here until 1998. It is now used by Carlsberg for meetings.

A Danish fitness class taking place on the Sondermarken (Southern field) with the Frederiksberg Slot in the background. The Palace is now the Royal Danish Military Academy

The Copenhagen Zoo

Back to the pad for an early night. Good night Copenhagen 💤

Day 5 - Christiana and Elephant Beer -
up early and out on the bikes

We cycle passed the Church of our Saviour
on the way to the free town of Christiana

Entering Christiana, a former military barracks, which in 1971 became a hippy commune for about 1000 residents

In the past criminal drug gangs have targeted Christiana to try to get a stake in the cannabis market, which has resulted in shootings and killings, notably in 2005 when one resident was shot dead and 3 others wounded on Pusher street.

The trading of Cannabis was tolerated by the Danish authorities for many years but it became strained due to the violence that accompanied it.

Now all of the cannabis stalls have been removed from Pusher street but trading still goes on, only more discreetly

This is the nearest we could get (with a camera) to Pusher street and the 'Green Light district' where they openly trade cannabis in the street

Indoor skateboard park

'The world is in our hands'

Next on the tour we cycle to the old Naval Harbour at Holmen

This is the Nyholm central guardhouse

HDMS Sælen (seal) is one of three Tumleren class subs in the Danish navy, it was launched in 1965 and decommissioned in 2004 after seeing active service during the invasion of Iraq

HDMS Peder Skram was in service until 1990 and was named after a 16th century Danish Admiral. It is now a museum.

...and we cycle back to our favourite place (Nyhavn)

Time to indulge in Danish ice cream

Hotel d'Angleterre one of the poshest hotels in the city

'Christian V on horseback' in Kongens Nytorv (King's New Square) was raised in 1688 and is the oldest equestrian statue in Copenhagen

Stork Fountain in central Copenhagen (Amagertov)

Royal Copenhagen is officially the Royal Porcelain Factory founded in 1775 and very pricey indeed

Hot Dog time

No trip to Copenhagen can be complete without a Danish hotdog (Pølse) covered in crispy fried shallots, pickled cucumbers and smothered in Danish Remoulade sauce

Next stop Rosenborg slot but we are a bit late so we decide to do a castle 'double header' tomorrow

Back to our favourite place

Akvavit O'clock

Aalborg the mecca of Akvavit

Now for the entertainment as a women falls into the water and a bloke on the table next to us dives in to save her.😇

Emergency services are fast on to the scene

Women rescued and hero given a blanket and akvavit. Result👌

Day 6 - The Danish Royal Tour
First stop = coffee

Entrance to the Rosenborg Slot

The castle was built in the Dutch Renaissance style and was originally built as a summer house for Christian IV (1606-34)

After 1710 the castle was rarely used as royal residence although it was used when the British attacked in 1801.

During our visit there is passing out

Back on the bikes to Amalienborg

Amalienborg has been the permanent residence of the royal family ever since the Christiansborg Slot burned down in 1794

Frederik VIII's study

The Faberge Chamber focuses on the close ties between the Danish and Russian monarchies. This dish was a gift to Christian IX during his visit to Saint Petersburg in 1894 for the occasion of the funeral of his son in law, Emperor Alexander III. 12 days later he attended the wedding between Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna

The Golden Egg with Hen was made in France in 1720 and is said to have inspired Russian crown jeweller Peter Faberge to create his famous easter eggs.

The egg has 5 parts: ivory egg shell, gold
egg shell, hen, crown and ring.

After all of that culture it's back to Nyhavn for a final drink

Cycling back into Vesterbro for the last time

Parking up the bikes in the court yard

Last orders in the Spunk Bar, Vesterbro. I last frequented this establishment about 30 years ago and nothing seems to have changed much. A fitting place to end a great holiday.
