14 Jun 25

After leaving Dunajská Streda we headed to the Western Slovakian city of Trenčín which is located near the Czech border in the valley of the river Vah. We are planning to see 2 matches, Portugal v Poland and a Slovakian 4th tier game
Location of the Stadiums
Tickets were available online via the UEFA U21 website. Due to the low capacity I assumed this one would sell out so I purchased 2 tickets in Sector B2 (early doors)

The Sinhot Stadium is the home of AS Trenčín and has a capacity of 6,366. The stadium was built in 1960 but has undergone several renovations between 2016 -21
Portugal (U21) 5 Poland (U21) 0
Attendance: 4469

The stadium as seen from the castle. It currently has 3 stands which can take spectators the old stand was used for advertising and media

Day 1: Arrival and Slovak Dinner

Another glorious day as we arrive in Trenčín. The city is quite small and has a population of 56,365

After checking in we find the closest bar
The bar was called 'Pivaren Sport Klub' and here we had a pint of Czech beer called Radegast
The beer is brewed in the Moravian-Silesian region of the Czech Republic and is named after the Slavic god 'Radegast'
After a few warmers we headed into the main thoroughfare which was a short walk away, through an arch. It led us straight to the Plague Column on Peace Square which is a baroque pillar honouring the victims of the 1710 plague
The Piarist Church of St. Francis Xavier on Peace Square
After meeting up with Brasso and Wigan Steve, me and Bish head to a Slovakian restaurant and brewery called LTP
Lanius Trenciansky Pivovar
Day 2: Matchday and the castle, We are up and about early doors at the tourist information office. It is there that we find out we have the choice to take the train to the castle or walk up the mountain. We are on a budget so we walk💪
The City Tower was built in the fist half of the 15thC. It was the former Lower gate of the fortified town protecting it from the South (also known as the Turkish Gate).
Great views of the castle from City Tower
Peace square and the Piarist church of St Francis Xavier
Fountain of Valentine the Nix
Legend has it that a Nix (water spirit) called Valentine fell in love with a gingerbread girl called Anna. Vodnik Valentine was a Nix who wandered to Trencin from Moravia but the locals did not like him and never accepted him. One day Anna's house was on fire, the Nix ran to the river Vah and opened new springs to extinguish the fire. Anna survived the fire but the water spirit died. In memory of this heroic act, the locals built fountains and wells to commemorate him
It is time to walk up to the castle via the parish stairway
Entering the castle grounds
This Tower seems almost human
A glimpse of the stadium from the Barracks
A peak at the stadium from the tower
Exhibitions in the castle's Museum showcase all periods in its history, including WW2 when it was occupied by both the Nazis and the Soviets. Time for a bit of weapon training!
The castle from the Clock Tower showing Mathew's Tower, Louis' Palace and Barbara's Palace
Behind me is Barbara's Palace and Lapidary
Zapolya's Palace and the Summer Tower (nearest)
We walked back down via Brezina forest park. Behind me is the Southern fortifications including Jeremy's Bastion
After all that graft we are famished, so we stop off for lunch at the Retro Restaurant for a typical Slovak meal; duck on a bed of red cabbage accompanied by pancakes
Before the main event we head off to the train station to go one stop southbound to 'Nove Mesto Nad Vahom'. Apparently there is a game in the Slovak 4th Division. See next blog 😊
After returning from some extreme ground hopping, we find the stadium lit up. Time for a pre-match beer🍻
From B2 we can see the castle lit up above Blocks D1-D3
To the left is the main Stand which houses the Sky Box, ViP A1/A2 and A1/A2 areas
To our right is the remaining original stand which is only used for advertisement and media
It is 4:0 at Half Time and Portugal look dominant in every department. This could get much worst for Poland
The stadium PA announces that 4,469 fans have attended this Portuguese master class
The Polish defence form up to face a corner kick but the damage is done already with the final score being 5:0
It's Father's Day and we are on the move to Nitra
